We maintain the wilderness

Since November 2018, the Jemez Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen of America has endeavored to maintain the wilderness and backcountry of northern New Mexico for equine and all other recreational uses. Our mission coincides with the national mission to “work to ensure the public lands remain open to recreational stock use”.

Equines bring us together.

We come from diverse backgrounds with varied experience. Among our members are equine professionals, accountants, homemakers, programmers, kindergarteners, cooks, and retirees.

Pack Support

We haul in supplies to rugged and remote areas for the Forest Service, Wildland Firefighters, and others.

Trail Clearing

We remove deadfall and clear hazards from trails like the CDT, ensuring they’re ready for your next hike or ride.

Education

We organize clinics and rides so you, your horse, and your equipment are ready for the backcountry.

Camaraderie

Our potlucks are second-to-none, so campouts and rides are our second-favorite activities.

Events

Ride with Us

Come to a campout and give backcountry riding a try. You don’t need to be a member for your first event. After that we offer family and individual memberships, which help support us as a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
